Raising and Breeding Rabbits By Cl Hendricks Breeding Rabbits Just because rabbits breed like...well, like rabbits, when you're breeding rabbits things may not always go smoothly. I thought you could just put the doe in with the buck and "slam bam" you know...but the process appears to be a little more complicated, especially when you have a virgin buck, a virgin doe and a novice breeder. The first time I tried breeding a doe to a buck, I was disappointed to discover that "it" evidently didn't take. So about 15 days later, I decided to try it a bit differently. This time instead of putting the doe in and immediately holding her for the buck (which he's plenty eager!) I put her in and stepped back for a minute. She moved around a bit, while the buck immediately expressed an interest and tried to corner her. Then I stepped in and moved her so she was stretched out and allowed the buck to do his thing. This time with the expected squeal and fall off to the side by the buck. I'm hopeful that in about 10 days I'll be able to palpate her abdomen and feel some little babies. If so, then in typical rabbit gestation period of 28-32 days I could have some new bunnies. Contributor's Note I'm still learning about raising rabbits and finding it a wonderful experience.
